Since when do children wander into careers? If someone is talented and goes their entire childhood, and can't come up with any other career to be than an artist, then fine for them. Clearly, they're not motivated by wealth or power, and they want to express themselves. Most artists actually start out with other careers, and art is a hobby that "takes over."

A child who longs to be an artist will have a much higher chance of being successful if they are praised and encouraged and coached instead of belittled and warned that their future is doomed. Teach them financial management skills, and allow them to study the careers of successful working modern-day artists.

To decide it is "fundamentally disregarded" is silly, it depends on what circle of people you're talking about. Museum folks, local art guilds and etc, don't disregard artists, nor do art schools.

To decide it is "unsafe" is also very negatively biased. What IS safe? living your life in a career that you aren't suited for is more unsafe.

1. How is it unsafe?

2. Look around you. Everything around you, the clothes your wearing, hell, even your hairstyle is some form of art.

3. What if the child wants to study architecture, and they end up with millions? That is also a form of art.

4. People should stop being so ignorant about art. Not all artists are sitting in a studio, living off of Fancy Feast and grapes and drawing all day. You can do so many things with art. You can go into advertising, you can create buildings, you can create statues, have your own clothing line...the list is endless. There are people with corporate jobs that are artists on the side. The main thing is to know what you want to do with your art.

An artistic child is more sensitive than other kids. To crush the spirit of an artistic soul is cruel.

Encourage the child's artistic talent. Send him/her to classes in the artistic area of the child's interest.

But also encourage the child, especially when the child is ready for college to take some very practical job skill related classes.

Business or computer skills are great. A teaching credential would also be good to fall back on.

Hello,

No encourage them to pursue their talents but also point out that a back up career is a good idea also since only one in about several thousand make it big as far as finacial success goes. Sadly the right connections and family ties are just as important as talent... look at Hollywood all these years.

encourage them to continue. my nephew wanted to do nothing but become a rock and roll star. talked to him and suggested he continue this dream but also go to college and have " a back up plan " which he did. am proud to say he has a MBA degree and makes good money -- and yes he still plays music -- at the last time I spoke with him.

NEVER crush a dream of a child. If one is talented and focused.. always encourage them to follow their heart.

Without art there'd be no new fashions, no architecture, no commercial ads. No interior decorating, no jewelry making, no eloborate furnishings.... not much at all.
