Because your father is a man. The flag is traditionally passed to a woman.

Nearest Female relative - so you Aunt by protocol would be right.
I wonder what happens when it is a female soldier or vet who passes -- does it go to her mother instead of her husband? That doesn't seem right.

I am guessing that the flag goes to the next of kin. So, like, sibling, child, cousin, aunt, uncle, etc.

Because your father and your aunt both lost their father, and trying to make it a contest to see who gets the flag is just juvenile.
Pffft.

Should go to nearest female relative.
One of these days, the services will get dragged into the 21st century and give it to the nearest relative-male or female.
Maybe she'll share?
Sorry for your loss.

I'm really not sure but it would probably be passed to whoever had Power of Attorney. Just an idea.

I think the oldest son or daughter gets it, I'm not sure though.

to answer your question, the mother would get it first.
I think they gave it to the closest female relative in your case.
