When you go to college you can choose to be a "premed" student. That is not a major and you can't get a degree in "premed." It is just a temporary status that allows the university to assign you to a special advisor who will give you some help in organizing your application to med school and give you advice about what courses to take.
You still have to have some kind of major like chemistry or biology, etc. Med schools don't really care too much what major you are as long as you take the required courses and get very high grades. Usually they require chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics with calculus, and a few other courses.
In college all the premed kids take the MCAT exams, which are like SATs only much harder - they include a lot of college level math and science. They are quite important in deciding whether the med schools will admit you or not. If you get a low score in the MCATs you can pretty much forget about being a doctor.
Some med schools only accept as few as 1 to 2% of the applicants. That means you need to be a very, very good student in college to get into med school. Some schools accept a higher percentage, but basically no one gets into med school who isnt smart, hard working and well prepared.
Good luck.

Also look into volunteering at your local clinic or hospital! Look into shadowing Doctors, not just the specific field you want to go in, this is the time you can use to get a full spectrum of the career field! But at the same time keep focus on your grades and STAY POSITIVE! Don't worry what others may say, "HS" is in the past, move forward and remain focused. Show them (acceptance committee and well I guess any doubters) that you really want this you have done your homework and you are willing to do what ever it takes for you to fulfill your dream!

they hype up that grades are that important in hs..but once your in a college they cant tell you not to enroll in a program..they wont reject money.
They can potentially kick u out of a program if u are required to maintain a certain gpa average during college tho.. it depends on the school ..And you defintarly need to maintain a certain gpa to get into a good med-school.... but keep this in mind:Grades are a way to rank you but cannot determine how good or bad you will be in a feild.. just because some one is book smart doesnt mean they will succeed.
The person who grauates first in his class from Med school is called doctor...
The one who graduates last in his class from Med school is called.....doctor.

yeah, you can do whatever you want after high school. you can declare a pre-med major like biology, chemistry, or biomedical engineering, which is what I am doing. You just have to do amazing in your college courses, the MCAT, and have volunteer hours up the wahzoo.
But yeah, no one cares about your high school work once you are in college, and med schools only look at your college stuff.
