When white light passes through a glass slab then no spectrum is seen after the light comes out of the slab although it refreacts different colors of light to different extends but in the case of a prism this happens........we r able to see a spectrum of 7 colors.........Why is it so???????

It is because the faces of the slab of glass are parallel to each other, while the faces of the prism are at an angle to each other.

Light entering the glass gets bent "inward" (in a direction more perpendicular to the face), then travels through the glass in a straight line, and then when it hits the opposite face, it gets bent again in a direction away from the perpendicular.

If the two faces are parallel, the geometry is such that the beam that exits the glass is always parallel to beam that entered the glass. This means that even though the colors disperse slightly (bend at different angles) while inside the slab, they all "reconverge" when they exit.

But in the case of a prism, where the two faces are not parallel, the outgoing beam is bent at an angle that depends on the index of refraction. Since the index of refraction is (slightly) different for different wavelengths of light, the various colors exit at slightly different angles from each other, so the colors disperse.

First you have to read more about Snell's equation:
n1*sine(tetha1) = n2*sin(tetha2)
where n, is square root of the medium impedance which is correlated with the length of the wavelength.

A visible light consists of a spectrum of electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths, this phenomena can be proven by the Fourrier Transform.

At a zero angle (plane propagation), they do not seperate because the incident angle is 90 degrees, sine 90 degrees is one.

Now if you change the angle between the visible light and the "glass slab" you will see they separate.

When light enters from air into a medium it is split up into its spectrum.

If the split rays were sent back again into air they will combine to form white light.

In the glass slab, the angle of incidence equals the angle of emergence from the glass and hence the rays combine again to form white light.

In the case of prism, the angle of emergence is not the same and hence they cannot combine again

The refractive angle of the incident light is dependent on frequency. So the different frequencies in white light are refracted through different angles.
BTW, the spectrum is an infinite number of different frequencies. Our eyes only detect the "visible" spectrum, which is still an infinite number of colors, however our brain sees them as essentially the 7 colors of ROYGBIV.

The phenomenon is called dispersion. Different frequencies of a wave (like light) can have slightly different speeds in a medium, so you can have slightly different indices of refraction, so different colors can refract more or less when you go from one medium to another. So an object like a prism or a water drop can separate the diffrerent frequencies in the white light.

In the prism the two surfaces contributing to medium change are NOT parallel. This causes splitting into the visible spectrum.

Whereas in the glass slab the the two surfaces contributing to medium change ARE PARALLEL.
The angle of incidence = angle of emergence. Thus no splitting occurs.

The prism separates the different frequencies because of it's shape.
