What I'm curious about is the relative influence of comfort vs. other factors such as social convention, in deciding whether to wear one or not.

Cheers...

my breasts are way too big not to wear a bra, it's all about comfort and how nice I look

You know... that is interesting!

It depends on the bra! Like many things it is all 'bound up' in making money. Bras are not so much about health as they are industry, competitiveness and image.

Health wise, most bras restrict too much. Resitricting a womens breasts does not allow the glandulary system to flush out naturally and makes us serioously more vulnerable to breast cancer. These glands are a network that goes beyond the breast and they really do need to be flushed out regularly! We are not taught that! Many theories as to why I am not going to go into here. They are all terrible and abhorant!

On the other hand, like men, we in time are subject to gravity and that can cause inconvenience and discomfort regardless of ideas of aesthetics. Both men and women 'drop'. LOL! Very disconcerting business it is too!

So for things like sports or just a day when keeping it a little more together is impoirtant yes, useful! Just it should not be worn all the time. Those suportive stretchy camosaols and tanks are actually not bad for us. IMO!They are comfortable and help with the social convention part you mentioned! Yes size makes some differnece even to a womans back!

When I was in high school I had one friend getting implants because she was hung up about being small breasted and another having reduction because she was very large and had terrible back problems related to her size! WOW! Please don't judge them, but you have to be aware that this stuff profoundly effects females! I suppose men have some equivelent. Empathy!

Flush your breasts ladies!

Peace and awareness! Good health to all!

I would recommend a "high end store" to help you choose the most comfortable, correct fitting bra. They have employees there that know all about proper size, fit, and style for comfort with individuals looking for the best bra to meet your needs. Macy's, Victoria Secrets, are 2 that I can refer to you. See I have the same problem. I need comfort, and style along with the right bra to make my breasts look great. These stores my be a little expensive, but worth your while to check them out. Victoria Secrets often has huge sales, that is when I go to buy several bras at a time. Also, sometimes it is great to be free and not wear a bra at all, however, it all depends on where you will be when not wearing one. You don't want to appear vulgar in any way. Good luck with your search.

I'm a B cup and only very rarely wear a bra. I don't usually find them comfortable at all. There is one exception that I am surprised none of the other answerers mentioned. There are a few days of the month when they are a bit painful, and then having the girls in a bra feels better for the support. At those times I wear a sports bra or a day bra. My husband bought me one with underwires once--I asked him if there was any part of his body he wouldn't want held in place by wires just for fashion's sake. He got my point.

I imagine it does depend on the size of the breasts, I know some women who are A cup, they can get away with not wearing a bra if they want. But the bigger the cup size the more likely the women is to wear a bra. Some women with large breasts both need it and want it - yet some women suffering from fibrocystic breast disease can get tremendous relief from breast pain by going without bras.

I remember reading somewhere that wearing bras all the time helps prevent them from sagging too much, that is probably why most women wear them. But I think that is largely a myth, there is no proof that bras would prevent breasts from sagging. Breasts are supported by ligaments, and if breasts ligaments act anything like other bodily ligaments, they may atrophy from the constant unnatural support from the bra.

As for bras being more comfortable? I think it depends on the women you ask and the type of bra they wear.

Now, at the risk of making myself look like a nutcase, when I was a teenager, I purposely would wear bras that were two to three sizes too small and that were very constricting because I didn't want to have large breasts. To me having large breasts was uncomfortable in and of itself. I think doing that um prevented them from growing too large. I know that it caused me to go down two whole cup sizes, which was fine with me. I don't wear bras like that anymore however, I don't have to, they aren't growing anymore.

Thinking about breasts today?

As a child of the 60's I went braless for years. Big mistake!!! If only they looked now like they did 30 years ago.

After wearing a bra all day I can't wait to get it of when I get home. Although in the morning I feel better with it on. I am a little too big to go bra less in public, too bad I wasn't smart enough to realize that way back when. Except then I was young. Today I would just look like a floppy lazy old woman. I saw one of those the other day and I could not believe she went out like that.

I wear a bra because I need one and it feels better to contain them.

I love not wearing a bra. I'm only an A but I cant bring myself to go out in public without one on. The only time I take mine off is when I'm home alone or about to go to bed. Having the bra on is so uncomfortable. At times it has actually put me in a bad mood and I would take my bra off to calm down.

I don't particularly enjoy my boobs popping out of shirts or nipping out, so no...it's not uncomfortable for me. They can actually be quite comfortable, depending on what type you get or the material. It's going to feel funny at first wearing one for the first time, but you get used to it. I love going braless when I'm sleeping though, of course.

It does depend on the size though...if someone is a C cup and the other is a tinier A cup, the person with the larger size is going to probably be more uncomfortable going braless rather than the person with the smaller size.

Plus, if you don't support them, they're going to get pretty saggy as you age !!!

Depends. My ex wife hated wearing bras and she used to run around the house bra-less and topless all the time. I know women in the military, however, who say they HAVE to wear a sports bra before PT (exercise) since their breast are so big that it hurts them when they go running.
Also, some women cannot wear bras with some type of dresses since doing so is tacky. I learned a lot of these things from my ex-wife.
