Really! I've had this fair-prize goldfish for 3 years (a record!) and she's stayed in the same tank she came with for all those years! Does she get bored? She get's to eat, and then just kinda' swim a little and then blow some bubbles! Wouldn't you be bored?

An Indian song says if you want to know how a fish drinks water you will have to be born in the fish line. The answer to this question can really be known under similar circumstances. Now Indian gods did appear in the form of a fish. but it would necessary for us to resort to more mundane measures to find out an answer. Now Boredom is a state of mind in which one interprets one's environment as dull, tedious, and lacking stimuli. Obviously to do all this would need a developed brain and that level of development could hardly be expected at the evolutionary stage which an extremely primary (primitive) .While(as a Sanskrit stanza says) man is at the same level as the other animals in respect of the primary requirement e.g. food, sleep, fear and sex but differs in mental development(though the animals do have primary level intellect) The feeling of boredom presupposes a wider canvas which is not available at the fish level and so they cannot be bored.

That is a good question. I'm not sure but I think it is possible for fish to get bore if they don't have any room to move. Goldfish normally get very large and can live for many years when kept correctly. In order to you that you most do the following things.
1 Meet all of there dietary needs.
2 Do weekly or daily water changes.
3 Give them the room to grow.
Of the above three it sounds like you are doing 1 and 2 very well. The third one however you are not doing so well at. You need to give your goldfish room to grow. I suggest that you put your goldfish in a larger tank. I think you will find that the goldfish will swim around more and be a lot happier for it.

Fish do get bored, especially smart fish like Goldfish. If you have decorations in the tank or other tankmates, they will be less bored. If you decorate, try to rearange the decor every time you do a water change. I hope the Goldfish is in a real tank, not just a bowl, because if it is in a bowl, you are killing it as we speak. By keeping Goldfish (which can grow to almost 2 feet) in a bowl, you are stunting the fish's growth. The internal organs continue to grow and it will kill the fish if the fish is 2 inches long with the organs of a 20 inch fish. Yes, they get bored.

Ummm bettas are not boring. Mine is very active and they are very beaultiful fish. The reason why they look boring is because their in cups with no room to swim around, when in the store. Once you bring them home and put them in your tank you will see the difference in activness. The smallest tank size for a betta is no less then 5 gallons. They also need a filter and heater. Tetras and guppies are out of the question, tetras need a tank thats 20+ gallons and are also very sensitive to water parameter (water quality), guppies on the other hand need a minimum of a 10 gallon tank. Go with a betta, you can only get up to a 5 gallon and thats the only fish that can live in a 5 gallon anyways.

"Well do goldfish have a memory? After extensive research, scientists were able to conclude that the goldfish memory last around 3 seconds, depending on the breed."

I'd always heard 3 seconds, but looked it up to verify for you. Read the source article as it says your tank should be changed around often, to increase the lifespan of your fish. It's not so much that they get bored, but they do need different/new stimulation for their brains to grow and for any chance of memory improvement (however minute).

Interesting question pal ! I guess they do not have a very long memory like us human's to feel bored and restless with the same activities. Though fish having a few seconds memory is a myth, but they probably dont remember much as we can afford to do, and thus are saved from being bored.

Well, I think it might get bored. I would try getting a bigger tank (10 gallons) and another goldfish of the same species.

I don't know, but they really suffer in confined tanks smaller than 20 gallons. You are lucky he's made it this long.
