What's stopping the US is the fact that nearby countries aren't worth taking over.
Russia, under Putin, is trying to re-establish hegemony in the former Soviet states.
China, as typical of the inherent imperialist nature of communism, has taken Hong Kong and Tibet, and is threatening Taiwan now.
Funny, but I don't see the "Bush is a war criminal" idiots trying to get Putin or Wen Jiabao into international courts for their crimes. Why is that?

Just because it has happened in the past, does not mean that it is something to aspire to. Both Cannibalism and Slavery were widespread at some time in the world, both have mostly become very limited. The question to ask is whether war serves our current societal interests?
But justifying the current on the past is bound to lead to even worse consequences.

Because contrary to popular liberal belief our President is upholding the constitution and we were not formed under terrorism or communism. We could very easily take over weaker nations to expand our "empire". However that is not the American way. Okay libs don't go back to the days of the Indians. I am talking post constitution.

Some of us, dreamers, believe that Humankind is marching to higher standards of decency. Would you like to go back to the lawlessness, violence, brutality of the past?
In some places you can. Western democracies have moved beyond that, I hope.

There are rules (which the U.S. agreed to) with regard to invasion. You can't do it just because you feel like it; there has to be a legitimate reason for it.
