It could be for a number of things, just as we study lower life-forms right here on Earth, why should what the aliens are doing be any different? Perhaps it's just to observe, maybe to help when the time is right. Another possibility is that they may be just checking up on a planet that they terraformed millions of years ago. :)

Well, ask yourself why we would want to visit other planets, and that would probably be the answer for aliens of similiar intelligence.

They might be thinking about living with us, for the fact that we have a livable atmosphere. If you think about it, we're pretty spoiled: air, lots of water, ozone layer to protect us from the sun, good precipitation - we're pretty lucky. I just hope they don't want to take over...

There is no evidence aliens are visiting our planet.
If they ever do show up, we will have to watch and see what they have in mind.
