This question has sparked a lively conversation between my daughter, her husband and I (I had to ask them what a wife beater shirt is!) I never bought them for my husband because I have this theory of violence and slovenliness about the men I've seen who favor this style. Now knowing they are called this and why I feel my theory is confirmed. Once I voiced my theory my daughter concurred (we've never discussed this). My son in law says that this is ridicules, clothes don't make the man and it is akin to being judged by the company you keep. He has a friend who grew up with him whom none of us like and once my daughter met him it caused her some concern about their friendship; he wears the shirts, has had legal issues with many of his babies mommas where the police were involved, routinely needs loans and donations, has been known to have to sleep on his momma's couch(never for long because even she can't stand him for too long) and has never kept a job longer than a year. We asked him if he would like for his friend to visit him at his job in his wife beater shirt. He has conceded the point and the shirt is aptly named.

What is in a name? Would a rose, by any other name, not smell as sweet?
Speaking of wifebeaters, my cousin down at the trailer park says wifebeaters are part of the uniform there. Schlitz in one hand, a torn up hat, wifebeater, and cut-offs. That way they all look the same and the cops don't know who done it.

The shirts are not disturbing, but the term used could be changed, but I think that even if the change the term"wifebeater" will still be known as such.

I find the name very offensive. When I am cleaning out an aquarium and wearing this type of shirt, I hate the name association with such a term. Lets call them "Fish Guy Shirts". Anything mainstreaming domestic violence bothers me.

Not only is the name offensive, but the people who wear them (at least I find) are total Yeah Dudes. Thats a term we use in my area of the world to describe the kind of guy who is totally self absorbed and thinks he's totally hot and king "epletive deleted".

i never quite found the word "wifebeater" to fit a shirt. i think they call it that cuz fat guys tend to wear those and so it fights off all the women. but thats just me.

I don't know why they're called that. I just call them tank tops. I don't think of them that way, so I don't find the shirts themselves disturbing..... What I find disturbing is when people refer to them that way. So, yes and no.

Sure, while they're at it they can eliminate the racist term "deigo tee" for it, too. Not sure of the spelling, but why not just call it a tank, like it is?
