Negative. DVD-R discs are write once only. The only DVD discs you can erase and re-record on are DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM.

Yes...there is a way! Use the Compact Disc Eraser. It's a new gadget that quickly wipes out any CD or DVD in 2 seconds for data security purposes. It does so by applying an Optical-Strip on the disc, which renders the contents unreadable and unrecoverable. This method is more Eco-Friendly than breaking, shredding, or microwaving(toxic) and promotes CD Recycling - just toss your erased disc inside any plastics recycling bin, and you're done! No mess, no hassles, no toxic fumes! http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_6165372

DVD-R discs cannot be erased. They are write once only media. To re-write a DVD you need to use DVD-RW discs which are a good investment for transferring images and videos from one place to another. The only problem with them is that some of the older DVD components cannot read DVD-RW discs. If your buying a new DVD player I recommend getting one that supports DVD-RW playback as this will open up greater potential in your recording and playback abilities.

nope... you can buy DVD-RWs, but you cannot re-write/erase DVDs that are not "RW" just like CDs.
The difference between R and RW is the fact that in R discs, the information is burned into the foil in the disc, storing your information as long as the disc in readable... in RW discs the information is burned into a layer of heat sensitive pigment that can be "re-melted" kind of like wax tablets.

Quick answer is no. But if you want to make sure no one can access the data, just break it up, or zap it in the microwave for 20 sec.

Yes - stick it in the microwave oven - but you won’t be able to use it again. How to do it:
