There are two types of research: pure and applied.

For example, let's say that you are interested in rabbits and so you decide to fool around with rabbit food. You raise a bunch of rabbits and feed them all sorts of different diets to find out what food makes rabbits grow best. That's pure research.

If you work for Purina, though, and you are trying to find an improved rabbit feed, that's applied research.

The problem is that while business benefits from the developments of applied research, science as a whole benefits from pure research. Researchers Bayer don't win Nobel prizes in medicine/physiology.
