There's Balboa Park, for one. Two of my favorite museums, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Aerospace Museum, are located there. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center features 2 floors of educational and entertaining exhibits, and around 90 percent of those exhibits are interactive. It also has an IMAX theater, and their website (www.rhfleet.org, or you can google Reuben H. Fleet Science Center) lists the movies they are currently showing. They also have a real submarine periscope (it did serve on a submarine once) that was donated to them some time ago. It can rotate 360 degrees, and the knobs actually work. It gives you a good view of the area around the Fleet, as the end of the periscope is on the roof. The only thing against it is that it's somewhat popular, and sometimes you will have to wait 1 or 2 minutes to use it. The San Diego Air and Space Museum is a very large white cylindrical-shaped building, which makes it easy to identify. It is home to a very large collection of famous and unique aircraft, such as a SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest airplane ever built (not the fastest aircraft, though-that would be the Space Shuttle on takeoff or something. And yes, there is a difference between airplanes and aircraft), which is located outside the main entrance to the museum. They also have a reproduction of the Wright Flyer, a replica of the Sopwith Pup, the actual Apollo 9 Command Module, a MiG-17, an F-4 Phantom, an A6M Zero, a Supermarine Spitfire, and a F6F Hellcat, to name a few.

Almost anything you want to do. San Diego area is amazing. Not too expensive, unless you are buying a house, paying rent on an nice apartment, or staying in a Hotel right near the beach.
I'd suggest you relax, don't be a whiner, and don't expect people to entertain you. You are not the center of anybody's world while you are on a short vacation in San Diego. Be a bit inquisitive, not too pushy, dress very casual, sandals are good, much better than shoes and socks. Don't look and act like a tourist, a NARC, or a person with a big head who is "full of himself".
Neighborhood places to eat, drink, socialize, and relax are a good bet. Walking up and down a beach, expecting something to happen, such as meet beautiful people, is not too realistic. Making unpretencious small-talk and not bragging about how "special" you are "back home", will go far in allowing you to fit in.
Mexico is a bit of an adventure that is very close to San Diego, and it is actually quite safe, unless you are a wierdo looking for free/cheap sex and drugs. Then expect an a_ __-Kicking and possibly some jail time.
There is a hotel with a very nice lounge that has as the wall behind the bar, a glass view of the hotels swimming pool. It is well known (signs?) that women that dive into the pool and swim down to the extremely large glass window to the bar, and expose their breasts, can then come in later and get a free drink! Many pictures are posted within the bar.
Eat food you don't normally get at home, avoid the McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut habits. Try some real home-cooked Mexican food, Seafood, and drinks.
San Diego is a very large, wealthy city with almost anything you can imagine. So, if you are bored for very long, you can bet that it is YOU that is boring.
Cut-off's, no white sox, no dress shoes, no grease in your hair, good hygiene, no bragging, don't flip someone the finger, unless you are willing to face the fact that the person may very well get out of their car and teach you a lesson, or even may possibly teach you a leason from a bit further away, with a gun. Drive-by shootings often are preceded with a flip of a finger.
There are many, many military members living in the area, so keep your comments of the War in Iraq to yourself. Drugs will land you in jail for a long time. You may actually see "stars", but not know it because they dress in casual clothes, land look pretty normal.

Just got back from vacationing in San Diego. It was great! We did the zoo and Sea World...they are a must, don't pass them up. Sea World has changed a lot, there is much more there to do. If you are willing to spend money...do the experience seaworld thing, where you can get right in with the dolphins and buluga(sp?) whales. We also went close to downtown at the harbor. We did the tours there of the five ships, and did a harbor cruise. The USS Midway is also there. A must to tour, but give it 2 to 3 hours to really see it all. There are several different harbor excursions to choose from.
La Jolla(sp?) was great too. Saw lots of wild sea lions all over the place, and saw more sea life in the rocks than anywhere else. Enjoy your stay, we did!!

Th e beach is a excellent way to enjoy time wiht kids if you go to mission beach they have a roller coasters and arcades. Also if you are as adult you can go to bars. There are many malls with arcades. One other thing that you have to check out is the del mar fair in del mar its about a 15 minute to 20 minute drivefrom san diego but its worth it. They have horse races shows pig races rides game booths shopping centers food court all the different kind of food you can imagine. They have aquarums and every thing elses like dance shows if you go i advice you get there early because parking is a hassle the fair opens up at 10 so i advice you leave at 9 good luck and have fun!!! drive up to Carlsbad to Lego land... enjoy the beaches, or drive along highway 1 north and you can see all kinds of awesome views, great restaurants and little shops. If you have your birth certificates or passport you can drive down into Mexico and go to Baja or Tijuana. If you stay at a hotel pick up the little brochures in the lobby. There is a Soak City, Wild Rivers Water Park and you can always go out to Whale watch. Most of the piers will have excursions to take you out for a small fee. Your welcome and enjoy

The BEACH!!!! Swimming is fun, body surfing is fun, you can rent a boogie board or a soft surfboard and ride some waves. Just shuffle your feet on the sand to lessen your chance of hitting a stingray. There's a standing wave ride near Belmont Park in Mission Beach. You can skateboard or bike or run on the boardwalk. You can go down to Tijuana and look around...better see what paperwork you need to get back into the country though, first. Anyway, have a nice time.
