I found it wrapped in a cloth at back of a cupboard in the garage.... must have been there years. I don't have a hex key for it... I worked it open by hand.

Is it a medieval car jack/lift or something else please? Could it be for brake maintenance?

Thanks if you can advise. :) (g2g back to work.. will hopefully find out answer in a few hours when I get back - thanks)

It is a car jack. you can raise the car off the ground providing the car jack is in the correct position so it does not damage the bodywork underneath the car. You can still buy there car jacks in Halfords. They can take more weight than an ordinary car jack.

it is an old type car jack the center screwed up to near as possible to the axle(in those days) then you had a handle in two parts one with a square end to fit into the cog and then handle piece to fit into the sleve on the first length hard work but very reliable

it's a screw jack, kinda looks like an old car jack was it's purpose in life.
Not real sure from picture but it looks like a 1/2 drive racket would fit the spindle to turn the crank

Mechanical jack. The gear turns the screw and raises the car. There is also a mechanical adjustment to bring it up to height before jacking.

this is a jack but not for cars, this is possible from a colliery were it would have been used for lifting drams or some other kind of heavy industry, i have one in my caravan and it has come in handy for jacking caravans level, they are very powerfully and with very little maintenance they will last for ever.

My first response when I read your question was to say out loud "It's a dandy tool", lol

It's an old fashioned car jack without the handle.
