It never really gets too hot in San Francisco. Still you might want to avoid August but that is about it. Try May/June and September/October are all wonderful months weather wise.

As a native San Franciscan I would advise you to visit in the months of August thru November. These are by far the best weather months.
If you have time you must go to Beach Blanket Babylon. This is a fantastic show. It is a stage show that is a take off on current events. The costumes are great as is the entire show. The Club Fugazi which is where this is performed, is a small dinner like theater so you must make reservations. It is not a cheap ticket, but well worth the money.
While you are here, visit the new museum in Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, the Wharf, Parrott hill, the Cliff house Mission Dolores, 24th street in Noe Valley and the Castro Area. Especiall in the last two areas you will see many many old Victorian homes that have been restored, it will knock your socks off!!
There is no limit to the number of resturants in San Francisco. Whatever it is you want to eat, you will find it somewhere in SF.
Along the Wharf you will see many interesting street performers. You can hire a people driven cart to ride arount the Wharf area.
The old Ferry Building has been restored and turned into a kind of mall with bakeries, local dairy cheeses, produce, flowers etc. it is a fun place to be.
Parking in SF is expensive, so you might do well to park in a neighborhood and take a bus or streetcar to downtown, the wharf, chinatown. You can also go to Daly City and park and then take the bart train to the Ferry Building or to Market and Powell Sts and take the cable car to Chinatown, Northbeach, the Wharf and Ghiradelli Square.
There is so much to do here that you will most likely not see all of my suggestions.

March to June is usually nice, after that the fog hides everything. ~
Go across the GG bridge and visit the hill on the northern side for a view of the whole area.
