A lot depends on what you're planning to keep him in. A tank with filter and heater? How many gallons?
Bettas can be great community fish, but some don't like sharing their water. To reduce the risk of aggression toward other fish, choose kinds that like to stay in the lower strata of the tank. Cory and Otocinclus catfish are usually good with them (I had one betta that actually tried to shoal with cory cats!) Tetras can be good too. Be careful to avoid nippy fish, as the betta's long fins will prove too easy a target. Danios are a bad choice for that reason. And whatever you do, do NOT consider other labyrinth fish, like another betta (even a female) or gouramis. Bettas are VERY aggressive toward their own kind.
Here's a site where you can find out more about compatible species, and another where you can learn more about how to keep a healthy community tank!
Enjoy your betta!

It depends on your tank size. If you have it in a little vase, you couldn't add anything, vases are too small for even Bettas. If you have at least a 10 gallon tank with a heater, I would suggest some Corries (Corydas Catfish)(you would need to keep 2 or 3) and a school of Neon Tetras (7+). Do not get any fish with long, flowing fins, Bettas will mistake them for another Betta. Bettas only fight with Bettas or other fish they think are Bettas. Since Bettas are in the Gourami family, you could not keep Gouramis and Bettas together, they will fight to the death. Angelfish are also a bad idea considering they would become too large for a 10 gallon tank and they have long fins. Goldfish are coldwater fish, so if you are going to keep Goldfish and a Betta, you would need to have a tank without a heater, which I am assuming is what you have right now. If you have any questions, ideas, or information on tank siz, email me at "nosoop4u@cox.net".

I am no expert on beta's however I found that my male beta swam among tetra's, smaller gourami's, zebra's perfectly fine. When the fish got larger, (I had a gourmi that got about 2 1/2 inches long) sometimes you'd see the bigger fish chasing the beta...however I did not see any chunks out of the fins. My beta was a real character...he trained us to give him a dash of beta food every time we entered the room. If we didn't he'd swim back and forth quickly, seemingly to get our attention. Eventually he'd take food right out of our fingers when we held food at water level...

A 5 gallon tank (minimum) with heater and filtration device will save the beta healthful. information approximately Beta fish: scientific call: Betta Splendens different Names: Betta kinfolk: Belontiidae beginning: Cambodia, Thailand person length: 3 inches (7 cm) Social: adult males won't be able to be saved at the same time Lifespan: 2-3 years Tank point: suitable dweller minimum Tank length: 3 gallon weight-alleviation plan: stay meals greater suitable, will consume flakes and frozen meals Breeding: Egglayer - bubblenest Care: person-friendly to Intermediate pH: 6.8 - 7.4 Hardenss: as much as twenty dGH Temperature: 75-86 F (24-30 C) My sister concept her small tank grow to be cruel for her beta so she have been given a 5 gallon tank with filtration and heater and the beta is greater energetic (than being in a chilly water tank without heater). her tank is: Eclipse nook 5 device (Marineland). Marineland has a good determination of tanks with hood filtration/lighting fixtures device). those have suitable water filters (a working waterfall like clear out - yet once you hold the tank complete, the noise isn't noticable. the present isn't good for the beta. (I actually have a 12 gallon marineland glass tank). She additionally has 2 pristella tetras interior the tank and that they are wonderful with the beta. maximum different fish which you will positioned with betas are tropical (meaning they desire water temperatures above 72 tiers fahrenheit). compatable fish should not be fin nippers. (inclusive of barbs). (do no longer positioned angel fish with the beta). (additionally do no longer positioned fish with great fins with the beta). Fish that are smaller than the beta, inclusive of tetras, artwork properly with the beta. the final rule approximately style of fish and tank length is: a million inch of fish consistent with gallon of water. And be confident to purchase water conditioner to get rid of chlorine interior the faucet water which will injure fish gills. different care: replace out a million/3 of the water as quickly as a week to decrease down on waste / poisonous water situations of/from the fish. (this would save pH of the water in livable situations). My sister feeds her beta a pinch of nutrition (the pristella tetras desire nutrition two times an afternoon.) (each and all of the nutrition could be ate up interior of two minutes - if no longer -then you definately are feeding too plenty). good success at the same time with your Beta. :)

I've had a male betta in the same tank with 2 platies, 5 neon tetras, & a pleco. They were all wonderful together and I never saw any aggression with any of them. Most pet stores can tell you what other fish are compatible. Good luck! :-)

What size tank do you have? I keep my male in my community tank (when I'm not breeding him) with Neon tetras, bleeding heart tetras, barbs, swordtails, platies, corydoras, a kissing fish, and a algae eater. When choosing tank mates be sure to pick something out that is peaceful that doesn't have long fins. Also make sure they aren't fin nippers. Betta's are very peaceful with other peaceful fish.
