The geologic time scale is a tool that geologists use. It's merely the usage of fossils assemblages found in rocks, based upon subdivides in geologic time. As an example, on the basis of the fossils found, a geologist can say, take a section of rock in the lower portion of the Grand Canyon and determine that these rocks in the lower horizontal layered portion to be of Cambrian aged. It is a tremendous tool in unifying physical and biological sciences, in that it helps to work out evolutionary chronology.

The geologic time scale, representing and extensive fossil record, consists of 3 eras, which are subdivided into perios, which are divided into epochs.

I see that others have included links to one, but I wanted to tell you what it actually is, I hope that this helps.
