In a way... Swimming or any aerobic activity will engaged your metabolism and can boost it slightly. Swimming in the ocean or sea gives you a more intense workout than pool swimming due to currents, waves and natural obstacles but it does not affect your metabolism. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat so replacing your fat stores with lean muscle allows you to maintain your weight much more easily. Thus, being active will help bost your metabolism. However, the body's metabolic rate is determined by many chemical factors individual to a person. Your sex, height, weight, genetics, age, lifestyle, and body composition affect your metabolism. Sustained aerobic activity will give it a boost but there's nothing special about where you swim that will have an effect on your metabolism.

Always remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I don't know the answer specifically to the sea or ocean - I am guessing the reference there is the salt water will help.

I do know that if you do a little more excersise your metabolism will increase - not always a great deal but i guess it depends on how much excersise you normally do and what you are stepping it up to.
The reference I am making is swimming is a form of excersise !!!! (in case you didn't just assume that!)

Hope this helps !!!

I'm pretty sure it is because of the salt water it does something to your metabolism and doesn't make you as hungry as you normally would be if you were out of the ocean/sea.

the only differences i see from swimming in a pool or an ocean is the saltwater, and the waves. Maybe the act of having to fight against the waves increases your metabolism?

It boosts your heart rate. It is a full body exercise so it's one of the best, but you'd get the same effect in a pool not just the ocean.
