First as it is an older computer make sure you dont have static on you, i.e. walk on the carpet and then first thing you touch is the inside of the computer... so earth your self by doing the following.
unplug everything but leave the power cable in the computer, but turn the switch off at the wall that way your computer is still earthed.
take out screws of the back.
then take case of. you will see inside other cards, now there should be one free slot (should be white) there, if not you cant put in the card.
there will be a plate infront of the slot which is empty, remove this. and input the card put the screw in and close the case.
plug everything back in, (dont forget to turn it on again at the wall) now turn on your computer again. and you will just put the softare in that came with your computer... (there should be instructions with the card you brought,
Good luck!

If you've ever opened up a computer, and fiddled with the insides, it's easy enough to do. As long as there is an expansion slot available, you just seat the metal contact points of the ethernet card firmly into an available slot (make sure all power has been disconnected for some time first, and you touch some metal surface to discharge any static before you touch the insides of the computer.)
On the other hand, if you've never opened up a computer, it could be a task just to know how to open up the box. Unless the store has a technical support department, they won't do it.

You will need to look inside the computer and see if you have any open slots into which you can insert the card. They will be along the back of the PC, and have a long thin metal cover held by a screw that you can remove. If you have a port, then you can add the card.
With the computer off, you would remove ond of the covers and insert the card. Replace the screw to hold in the card. Boot the computer and run the software that comes with the card.
It is simple enough that most people can do it themselves.

If it's a NIC, a PCI Ethernet card, it's simple, plug it into one of the PCI slot (usually 2-3 of the same size below the video card slot), and if its not plug and play, you'll need to install the drivers for it, (usually from a cd or on the internet)

Power down the machine and unplug everything.
Take the side off, and look inside, where you should see slots to take expansion cards.
remove the appropriate blanking plate, and slot in your new card, securing with the screw that held the blanking plate in place.
Put the side back on. plug everything back together, and power up.
If you need to install drivers, do that, and hey presto !! you are online.
