Isotopes are any of the several different forms of an element each having different atomic mass.
Isotopes of an element have nuclei with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
For Carbon we have
12 C ( 6 protons and 6 neutrons)
13 C ( 6 protons and 7 neutrons)
14 C ( 6 protons and 7 neutrons)

Plus: They have different number of neutrons but they have the same number of protons.They have same chemical properties and different physicals properties (some isotopes are radioactive).

They all have the same number of protons in the nucleus, but different numbers of neutrons.

The number of protons in the nucleus tell us what element it is. The number of neutrons there tell us what isotope of that element you have.
