This an involved task. There is a reason the head gasket blew. Most likely a warped (or cracked head)
You will need a manual (Chilton's for example) that gives the details. This is not a job for a novice, or one to attempt with a beer in hand. Special tools will be required. The cost of tools alone, may exceed the cost of paying a trained mechanic to do the job.
Plan on it taking a week if you know a good auto machine shop (to get the heads milled). You will also need a set of gaskets for head repair.
A quicker fix would be to locate a used engine that is low miles and swap it out.

It is not so much the cost of the head gasket, it is the labor involved to get to it. I would say you are talking about 1000-1500 to replace the gasket. You will also need other gaskets as you have to pull the intake and that is another gasket. With the mileage on the car, I would pull both heads and take them to a machine shop and have a valve job done on it while I have it apart. If you can afford it, then you may want to rebuild the lower end also. Then you have an engine that will last for a number of years. good luck

You would want to replace both head gaskets as they will most likely come in a set & you will have the motor torn down that far anyway it is expensive. The gasket is fairly cheap but Iwould guess you are looking at 6-8 hours of labor assuming the head didn't get warped & you don't run into any other problems exhaust manifold bolts are a problem with these cars (breaking in the head) I am drilling out a few on my 89 formula I don't agree with teamepler@verizon.ne… I believe it would be cheaper to fix a used low milage engine could cost you 800.00 - 1000.00 then labor to install check your options wisely

You don't fix a head gasket, you replace it. Get yourself a Chilton repair manual for a 91 Firechicken and read up on the procedure. Decide for yourself if it's something you can handle. There are a few other parts you're going to need, and it requires normal hand tools.

I would guess $800-$1200 to have it repaired in a shop. You can do it yourself for $100-$200. Lots of labor involved, but it isn't real difficult.

What you're describing sounds to me like a leaking valve cover gasket, and not a head gasket leak ! merely remover the valve covers and scrape off the old gasket, and replace with a clean one... use a torque wrench to suitable tighten the covers returned to standards ! in case you heavily mean a head gasket you are going to might desire to do away with the valve practice from the right of the motor... could i recommend you seek for the help of a professional because it is very complicated until eventually you be attentive to what you're doing !

it just depends on how much the other person drove it that way. if he kept on driving it, then you might have to replace the heads too, because he could have warped the heads. you can save a heap of money if your mechanically inclined and know about cars. just go to auto zone and pick up a set of fel-pro head gaskets and take the heads to a machine shop and have them tanked cleaned and checked for warpage, while your at it, you might as well have the valve guides checked and new seals installed too.it shouldnt cost you as much if you can do the work yourself, the labor at the garages is what gets you, its higher then the parts.

THIS WILL MOST LIKELY BE A VERY LARGE MONEY PIT FROM DAY ONE.

THE HEAD GASKET JOB WILL COST MORE THAN THE COST OF THE VEHICLE.

DON'T TAKE IT TO PEP BOYS FOR ANYTHING, YOU NEED TO RETHINK THIS WHOLE IDEA.
