I always thought the A's were in The American League and the Reds in The National League. In the 1970's they even went up against each other (several times) in the World Series...
Now I read that yesterday they played a game together in June, and the Reds lost 5-3.
How could it be if they have always been in different leagues? Which team switched leagues?

Sorry, I watched a lot of baseball as a kid, but find it boring as an adult, so I don't watch much of it anymore... But, I do remember the Reds playing the A's in the'72 World Series, especially how devastated I was the Reds lost to them.
It isn't healthy to get that worked up over a silly game, so I don't follow baseball anymore, except to say I noticed in the paper that the A's played the Reds, and that surprised me...

Interleague play, one of Kommissar Seligula's little munny-making ploys which has been, admittedly, something of a success, first began in 1997.

Oakland and Cincinnati met in the World Series in 1972 (A's, 4-3) and again in 1990 (Reds sweep, 4-0).

In other news, the Beatles broke up, the Japanese have agreed to unconditional surrender, and man has created fire.
