I believe it was Russia, specifically the craft Sputnik. Please cross-reference this as I'm not 100 percent sure. As I view other entries here, I feel a need to clarify. Russians were the first to land on moon. Americans were the first to walk on moon: July 20, 1969, to be exact. Two totally different scenarios, so I wanted to elaborate upon that point.

Actually, the first country to land on the moon was the Soviet Union (Russia), with Luna II in 1959. The first country with humans on the moon was the USA.

USA, actual people on the moon, still the only one who has done this. Others are planning to, and should bring back the junk we left up there. There have been 17 moonwalkers all American.
