I have worked in the healthcare business for over 15 years, I worked for Aetna, I know how the system works, trust me it sucks.

Once again you people disappoint me. I hope none of you ever loose your job and insurance. Do you know what a visit to the ER is out of pocket? Do you know what it's like to have thousands of dollars in hospital bills?

Health care as a right? I'm not sure what your definition of a right is. If you're saying Health care is a right because it sustains life or is necessary for life then we could all make arguments that food is a right. Water. Sounds like Socialism. We know socialism doesn't work. We know our government would be inept at running a national health care system.

If you're just talking about Healthcare Insurance, then buy it. Don't tell me you can't afford it. You don't ask the government to buy your car insurance? Homeowners? You have to have these. Health Insurance is optional. This is what I think happens. Insurance is not cheap. So people do without it. Mostly the young. Then when something happens, you get stuck with a large bill. If you're making decent money they expect you to pay for it. You took a risk, and you lost.

If you worked at Aetna you know all this. I'm just wondering what kind of system are you advocating?

WOW, I cannot believe the answers to this question. The amount of ignorant and narrow minded people on this site amazes me.

First off, why should the insurance companies, which are multi million dollar corporations, dictate what type of medical coverage we should have? We are THEIR employers, without us, they would not be in business. Why do you assume that this is the way that it has to be? Things werent' always like this, I'm assuming that some of you folks who have been around awhile remember the days before HMOs existed.

Why do we need to have a middle man for our insurance? Are we capable of choosing and paying for our own health insurance? If AFFORDABLE, decent health insurance were available, why shouldn't buy that? We buy our own car insurance, don't we?

The real question is, Why do we let insurance companies into our lives like we do? It doesnt have to be that way.

Suthern whoever you are, you are naive beyond belief. Medicaid reimbursement is ridiculous- good, overworked doctors don't accept Medicaid reimbursement. Wake up and look around, there are hardworking people who can't afford "decent" health coverage because of the cost, and some of them are denied Medicaid coverage because they work. Not everyone is lazy and just spending their money on "luxuries" Why don't you wake up to what's really going on in this country?

It's pretty simple if you'll look at it honestly.

To be a "right", one has to have the power to do something without assistance from anyone. Rights are powers of the individual.

Not all powers are rights. They are only rights if the power is one that does not interfere with the rights of others.

The simplest illustration of this is the right to swing your fist. You have the power to do that, so it is a right, but it ends where someone else's nose begins.

So, what about health care. The very existence of health care depends on other people being able to provide it, never mind the question of whether or not they are willing to do so. Your so-called right to health care is a demand for goods and services that didn't even exist 250 years ago, not anywhere in the world. If you have a right to health care, who is obligated to provide it? What does it do to your right when there simply isn't anyone?

All of the politicians and whiners in this country claiming they have a right to health care won't accomplish anything except forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for services that the government has no power to create. Even if the government passed a law saying that all healthcare would be paid for by the government, they cannot legislate into being a single Tylenol, let alone a hospital or a doctor.

I'm appalled that people who otherwise appear to be intelligent think healthcare could possibly be a right.

I think everyone deserves quality health insurance but Universal Health Insurance will be at a high price. Our tax on gross income will probably be 40-60% to all the "free" care we'll be offering. Also, we all know very well that the quality of care will decrease signifigantly. I personally don't want the gov. to know my medical conditions and I wouldn't want to have to wait 3 months to have surgery.

I think the healthcare crisis would be reduced if people stopped buying designer tennis shoes and all the other crap they buy, and purchase a high deductible PPO catastrophic health insurance plan. This will protect them for the big stuff. A deductible of $2500 could be paid in installments to the hospital.

Did you know that over 50% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills? People need to protect themselves and their families and get health insurance!

We can help with the high cost of healthcare by placing a cap on lawsuits. Also, by limiting the advertisement campaigns by prescription companies. Some prescriptions have a 4000% markup.

What else do you think Americans "deserve"? a job? A house? A car? A computer? Where does it end?

I am not in favor of nationalized healthcare b/c it is cumbersome and ineffective (see Canada and it's wait lists) and when has our government done anything without it costing way more than it should and being way more complicated?

BTW, ALL Americans have access to health care, no matter what their economic situation. ANYONE can get basic care here. Not many countries can say that. Healthcare and insurance are expensive and people need to save in anticipation of that. It's called personal responsibility.

I DESERVE to have opportunity in America. Nothing else.

I believe that all Americans deserve healthcare. I also believe that it should be affordable for all Americans no matter how much income you have available. I do however do not believe it should be socialized and have Universal Healthcare like Canada because half of your paycheck goes to healthcare, you are assigned medical doctors you might not like, and you have to wait on a long waiting list just for an operation. I do however believe that there should be a government healthcare program available for anyone who cannot afford healthcare like students, the elderly, and the poor where they pay a small minimal fee to get healthcare services.

I don't even want to get into the whole discussion of healthcare and its costs. I will just say that I am semi-disabled, work very hard, pay a fortune for my insurance, have been sued, had to declare bankruptcy becaus e of health care costs, and am paying off another lawyer who has sued me for health care that I needed (for kindney stones and the resultant surgery--NOT a face lift!!!!)

The question I want to answer is the one about "rights". If, indeed, we have the "rights" to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"--I think that healthcare would be covered under these rights. We need healthcare for LIFE, and for HAPPINESS, and even for LIBERTY!!!

Your premise is hopelessly flawed. I do not see anyone saying that people do not deserve health care, or even insurance for that matter. What we deserve is not the same thing as what our defined rights are under the Constitution. Health care is available in our society whether you have insurance or not. Sure it is not always preferable to what you receive when you have the ability to pay, but it is available none the less. What you want is situation where you get to stick your hand in my pocket to pay for your health insurance. It is not a right and it stands contrary to every idea this country was founded on. This argument by people like yourself is tired, weak and lacks intellectual honesty. I would respect your arguments and others like it if you would just come out and say I want your money to pay for insurance for me and everyone else, rather than hiding behind arguments which hold no truth. Health care is available to all, you just don't like the current scheme.

Waycar made good points yet you flamed him. Let's pick food...

If you don't eat food, you will die. So, food should come way before health care. Then why isn't having food a right? Shouldn't the gov't then give all of us food stamps or boxes of food?

Education is NOT free. Citizens pay for it with taxes. Why do we do that? A society full of people without basic education is one with higher crime rates. And they are economically behind other educated societies.

And if you walk into a hospital and are injured, they cannot refuse to treat you.

Well we all have the right to have some sort of health care insurance but and this is the catch we have to be willing to work to pay for it. Why should those of us that work have to supply everyone with health care, the Bible also says that God helps those that help themselves.... Our constitution does not say that every other American must work and supply everyone else with food, housing, clothing and health care, I do not enjoy working 50 hours a week so I can pay taxes for someone else to sit home and do nothing to help them self, it's one thing to help a person get a start in life but they need to be willing to take care of themselves and their family, if you can't afford a wife/husband and kids than don't have them til you can. My hubby worked 2 jobs when our children were little so they could have what they needed in life and I worked one and our kids grew up to be upstanding self supporting adults. And I am not refering to those people that are to infirm to care for themselves, I am refering to the young and old people who would rather be on the dole than work.
