in an automatic transmission does the transmission always switch gears at the same rpm? for instance will the transmission switch gears at a higher rpm if you accelerate very quickly or will it always switch gears at say 2500rpm or 3000rpm no matter what?

It varies depending on a number of factors, but primarily throttle position. The heavier your foot is on the gas, the higher the revs will be when it shifts since you'll get better performance when your engine revs more. So when you were on that hill, you had your foot down so it stayed in gear longer. On a hill, you needed it to, if it shifted sooner it probably would not have had the power necessary to continue up the hill.
I don't think there is anything wrong with your transmission based on your description.
Hope this helps.

When you going up hill with an automatic transmission it's better to put it in the lowest gear possible. Because its a lot of strain on your transmission to switch gears when is trying to go uphill. When you do it again put it in 2nd gear it will rev really high that is normal. But it wont switch gears and you wont put a lot of strain on the transmission.
and yes the transmission switches gears at different RPMS depending on your acceleration.

An automatic transmission will shift at different RPMs depending on the acceleration. In the case of the hill, the transmission will not shift, or may downshift, to allow the car to accelerate or maintain speed on the hill.
If you have no other problems, and the car shifts "normally" when not under heavy load, your transmission is doing what it is supposed to do.

it shifts depending on how much throttle you are giving it. more throttle, the higher the rpm. if its always shifting at the same rpm then you have a problem, take her into the shop for a check up.

it works of demand from the engine if your trying to climb a hill the engine needs a lower gear for the torque multiplication
