I just read in the paper the other day that there is a law that he can stay in office until there is an end to this Iraq war. If this happens I'll just give up on voting!

That would be to declare Martial Law. Johnson didn't want to do it with the Viet Nam war, He simply refused his party's nomination and Nixon became the fall guy.

No. Because of the basic and simple fact that Bush has been very strongly upholding the Constitution (well, except for the 10th Amendment, but about 99.9% of all lawmakers over the past 50 years have been ignoring it, too).

There is no indication at all that Bush will do anything but peacefully and respectfully hand over the office of the presidency to the next elected president on January 20, 2009.

As for what you read, the only possible situation whereby Bush would remain in office is if there is some catastrophic event (such as a nuclear attack, or a major natural disaster like a giant meteor strike or an equivalent to the Yellowstone Caldera eruption) that would prevent the normal function of government.

Each president since the start of the nuclear era has had to prepare a document concerning the plans for continuity of government function in the face of a catastrophic event.

Only the more conspiracy theorist fringe has interpreted this as a means to stay in control. Don't believe them - they're not the arbiters of reality.

No. Only if there is no other person to end it. And that is an unlikely thing for him to do. We are not back in the day, when the president actually headed up the calvary. In todays time he is merely a corporate leader. The White House runs like a corporation, thanks to the Clintons. Remember history, I think you may see the light soon.

The US Constitution was amended after FDR to prohibit any president serving more than two terms (and they don't have to be consecutive). Unless GWB can get Congress to re-amend the Constitution he will depart in January 2009. His chances of Congress co-operating? Well, he's republican and they are democrat. Let's see...

They have said the same things about all the Presidents. Some fear monger stirs up something that the President is going to declare martial law or something and stay. Never will happen. The only one that came close wasn't a President but was Mayor Gulliani. He wanted to stay on as mayor to continue 9-11 cleanup but didn't.

No - there isn't a law that can keep him in office was an election has been held (although their is a possibility to delay things - it has never been used). If Johnson couldn't do it back in 1969. Its not going to happen now.

Good Luck!!!

*sigh*

Ya know, this came up about a week ago as well.

There is no such law on the books, he will not be president after Jan 9 2008, and no coup will take place.

Relax, have a coke and a smile!

OH, he's going to try; I think he's already tried to pass a law that essentially keeps him in power indefinitely, but trust me, his time is about to end. He and his handlers will be removed before the end of this year.
