Up to 5' 34 Inches
5' to 5'3" 35 Inches
5'3" to 5'7" 36 Inches
5'8" to 5'11" 37 Inches
Over 5'11" 38 Inches

The stick should be about at your hip.
Wood and composite are both good although it seems that more people choose composite. I play field hockey and own a wood stick, but I am looking into buying a composite stick. I have played with both types and prefer composite, as do many people.
STX is a good brand of field hockey stick. It is fairly reliable. Grays and Cranbarry are also very good (i prefer both over STX.) You will get a very good stick from them. As for the Brine....don't buy one. It is not a good brand for the sticks. They are kind of crappy so you should spend your money on something that will last better.
I hope this helps you. You can email me with more questions about field hockey if you want at katinthehat15@yahoo.com. I love field hockey! ---------Katie#40

I've played hockey for 12 years and have played in state teams some i know a lot about hockey!! The only time you would have a 38" stick is if you were extremely tall. I'm about 6ft tall and i use a 37" stick. Basically if the stick comes a bit below your belly button or level with your hip its a good height.
A good way to decide between a heavy or light stick is which position you are going to play. A heavy stick lets you hit the ball very hard but makes it hard to perform skills so a heavy stick is good for backs and halves. A light stick doesn't let you hit the ball as hard but allows you to perform skills a lot easier so therefore a light stick is good for strikers.
I use a composite stick and think they are better than wood sticks. I believe that the ball comes off better from a composite stick which allows better hitting and slap hitting. But i know people who prefer wood sticks. I believe composite is better.
Hope some of this info helps you!

If you place your stick next to you while standing up, see where the top of the stick lands. If the stick is horizontally even with your hip, then you should be okay. If it is up to your belly button, that is to big. Once you have experience, you will be able to justify whether you play better with a long or short stick.

Even though Lou Lou is correct if you plan on doing lots of specific shots e.g. Aerial shots then it should be shorter than your hip.

Lou Lou is correct. What you should be more concerned about is weight.

All you need to do to find what size you need is hold it up to you and if it reches your hip bone its good. i play.
