Number l certainly sounds like it might be a Cappybara, the largest rodent in the world. Although native to South America, a pair escaped from Lion Country safari in California and made their way to the coast back in the 1970's. They were spotted at the Marine Base at Camp Pendelton. Fish and Game issued a bounty o$200 per head but they rescined it when no sightings were reported. In l99l they were spotted in San Pedro, California, when I found a group of them boarding my boat in the harbor. I couldn't figure out what they were, because I had never seen anything like them. They have mink-like fur, three large talons on their front feet and two on their hind feet. They have no tails, and their ears are almost indistinguishable. No one believed me! Exactly one year later, I spotted them again. The Fish and Game actually caught one weighing 45 pounds in Palos Verdes, California. I tried to trap one, but they are very cleaver. The last report I read about in the paper was in Hermosa Beach, California, about 2001. Sounds like they are slowly working their way up the coast toward the growing fields! That could be disastrous because they are armnavours (they eat everything) and move in packs and can defoliate everything they come across that grows in your backyard! Does this sound like the critter you're referring to? As for Number 2, you should look up anteaters in your encyclopedia.

The first one sounds like the capybara, the largest living rodent. And the second ... I dunno, a tamandua, giant anteater, or an armadillo? Or maybe even an aardvark ... they kinda have big ears.
