I am writing a memoir for my project. & I am having a hard time choosing the fonts to use in my book. What are the common fonts which a writer use for their books? What about the italic words? What font are they normally? Also, what fonts are suitable for writing a memoir on World War II? Preferably serious & formal. Yet neat.

lols. thanks guys. i decide to use times new roman. anyway, just to clarify things up, i am not really publishing it. its just a school project, that ask us to write something on an ordinary man that is going to carry out an extraordinary deed. character is fictional but environment is true to that time. so i have done my research & is about to start on the project. have to look like a real book and everything so asking a bit about the font type and all.

I think the most commen one to use is Times New Roman. It`s really important that the people who are gonna read your book CAN read it. The font should be easily READIBLE.`I`ve tried to read plenty of books that I couldn`t finish cause the font was to fancy and impractical....dont go for something that looks good rather go for something that`s easy on the eyes. I know that Times New Roman doesn`t show your individuality but sometimes you gotta give something up to achieve your dreams.good luck

That entirely depends on what you are planning on doing with your book once you have finished it. If you are going to submit it to legitimate publishers (not vanity presses) and/or agents, then you want to use Times New Roman, 12 point, unless you encounter submission guidelines that specify something else is wanted. There are some agents and publishers out there who are that specific in their guidelines (but not many). That font does not change based on what the manuscript is about, and you will have little to no say in what font the book is finally printed in.
If you plan to self-publish (ie, use a vanity press), then the font is up to you. I hope that you have done all your research and decided that you have a very good, specific reason to use one of these companies. Here are many of the reasons not to:

If you mean a school project, then you should ask your teacher what kind of font he or she would prefer to read. Everyone has different preferences in text and font size, and has something they think is easiest on their eyes.
Somehow, I doubt that you are old enough to write a memoir about WWII. Are you sure you are not writing fiction?

Books used to have a note at the front telling you what font and size the text was set in. Lately, they seem to have stopped doing that, perhaps because hardly anyone is interested in that information. I'd suggest Times New Roman, with a size between 10 and 12 points.

Times New Roman and Arial are the most common FONT STYLE that is being used based on my observation... my favorite is the COURIER NEW.. It's easy to read because it is round in shape and simple... one thing though, since it is round it eats up a lot of space... actually, you can use this to your advantage ( i have... eheheh)... once, we were asked to write a 5-page essay.. the prof mentioned it should be font size 12 single space... she never mentioned there is a restriction in the font style... my essay was 3 pages long in Times New Roman but when I used the Courier New, i got just what i need!! 5 PAGES!!!

Obi_San said it best in her response. Use Times New Roman at 12 point. The Italics remain at 12 point. This font is neat, orderly, and professional while it takes up limited space.

I'd go with Times New Roman. Italicized words are simply in italic Times New Roman. Looks neat and professional.

I would say that you should go with Times New Roman because it is really simple yet formal and neat. This also has a pretty nice view in italics.

Well, you already have your answer apparently, but for things being submitted to a publisher (which yours, apparently, isn't), a uniform font is best (that is, a font where an "i" takes up the same amount of space as a "w"). Courier New is a good choice for such things.

It probably won't matter, since, if it is published, the publisher will dea lwith all of the typesetting and stuff. But I found an article on writers' favorite fonts that you might enjoy looking at -- to see their reasoning, if nothing else: http://www.slate.com/id/2166947
