1. The World at War (1974)
2. The Civil War- A Film by Ken Burns (1990)
3. Victory at Sea (1952) - a great visual B&W documentary. The historical information is however incorrect in some aspects.
4. The First World War (2003)
5. Liberty! The American Revolution (1997)
6. The Revolution
7. The Civil War: A Film by Ken Burns (1990)
8. The War Tapes
9. The Fog of War (not sure if this is a documentary but its good)
10. Hearts and Minds (1975)
11. Vietnam: a Television History (1983)
12. The Cats of Mirikitani (concentration camps WWII, Japan)
13. The War - Ken Burns (soon to be released about WWII)
14. American Doughboys: Heroes Of WWI
15. The First World War (a 4DVD set)

Besides that I'd recommend also checking this site:

If he likes documentaries then I would say "The World At War", narrated by Laurence Olivier, is one of the best about WWII. Also "Victory At Sea" about the naval battles of WWII is another fine documentary. I saw these when they were on TV so I do not have the DVDs, but I do know they are on DVD. Another that my friend has is "The First World War - The Complete Series" it is really well done and another fine documentary. "Vietnam the Ten Thousand Day War" is another top notch documentary. "Hearts and Minds" will make you think and is a little controversial, but still well made.

If he likes docu-dramas then "Midway", "Tora, Tora, Tora", "Blackhawk Down", "The Longest Day", are just a few of many that try to stay historically accurate.

Some of my favorite movies, set during war time.
The American Revolution : "The Crossing", "The Patriot", and "Drums Along the Mohawk".
The Civil War : "Gettysburg", "Glory", and "The Red Badge of Courage".
WWI : "All's Quite On the Western Front", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Gallipoli", and "Paths of Glory"
WWII : "Saving Private Ryan", "A Bridge Too Far", "Patton", "Flags of Our Fathers", "12 O'clock High", and "Catch - 22"
Korean War : "M*A*S*H", "The Bridges At Toki-Ri", "Pork Chop Hill", and "The Steel Helmet"
Vietnam War : "Apocalypse Now", "Platoon", "Full Metal Jacket", "The Boys in Company C", "We Were Soilders", "Good Morning Vietnam", and "Hamburger Hill"

There are just so many good war movies, I too am a history buff, that this list could get longer and longer. I would go to Amazon or IMDb and type in your historical era, like "Civil War Movies" etc, and you will get a pretty nice list of movies.

The Thin Red Line (1998), which tells the story of a group of American soldiers fighting the Japanese in the Pacific during World War Two.

We Were Soldiers (2002), which portrays the start of the Vietnam War.
