He's an adult.

Any attempt to "force" him to do Anything will simply result in a growing sense of resentment in him.

Are you so needy that you cannot see how important his phD is to him, and you cannot give him the space he needs to get it accomplished?

Education correlates to potential income. Ask him to compromise his degree and you are asking him to compromise your future together.

It might be a good idea to give him some space, let him come to you for conversation. It sounds to me that he is not really interested in what you say. Is it work that is all he is thinking about? or is there something else on his mind?
4 months is not a very long time to know a person or are you just getting to know the real him.

You are a strong woman... I had many friends who could not stick to their man while he was in medical school. It is going to be tough but you will have to stick by him if you really care for him. The easiest thing you can do is just let him know how you feel. Being in a relationship requires good communication and when your able to communicate your allowing your relationship to grow.

Come out and ask him why he does that? If he continues then I think that means he is not that interested in you. I would find some extra cirricular actiivity to keep me busy. Not sink myself into him so much.
