History mystery

Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 'S secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln .

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln , was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln , was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe , Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

The thing is, you REALLY have to stretch some points to make this work...for example Booth was cornered in a tobacco BARN, not a warehouse...and he had not 'run' there in the sense that he fled directly to it...that was just where he ended up.
Also, Booth was born in 1838, not 1839.
Shall we go into all the differences between the two events?

Lincoln was born into relative poverty in Kentucky, Kennedy was a scion of one of Massachusetts' most well to do families.

Lincoln was a Republican, Kennedy a Democrat.

John Wilkes Booth was one of the most famous and celebrated men of his day. Lee Harvey Oswald was a nobody who killed Kennedy to make a name for himself.

Hi superwoman,
No, I dont think it is all a mere coincidence, its too many coincidences to be accidental, some of it has some explanation.
And wether you need a girlfriend or not, is not of concern to anyone, the person who made that coment can take it back and put it somewhere wher there is no light.
One thing I can do however, is recommend the following books that bright light to many matters concerning all the coincidences you mention:
"The plot that killed kennedy"
"Rule by Secrecy"
"JFK: Say Goodbye America"
All three written by Jim Marrs.
They are not the easiest to read, but boy are they worth reading!! The best part of it, is that they are all based on FACTS.

Neat - except that Lee Harvey Oswald didn't shoot President Kennedy. The Italian rifle that was found was his but was not capable of the accuracy and speed of shot to fire the three shots heard - this is apart from the fact that when the police got Oswald back to the police precinct they gave him a cordite test which proved negative (proving he hadn't fired a weapon for at least 24 hours).

This isn't the only coincidence in history, although I admit this is an extremely interesting and unique example. Have a look at Marc Bloch's chapter on 'Historical Criticism', part 3 'Toward a Logic of the Critical Method'. It gives further examples of coincidences and details the use of probability in history.

It may either be a coincidence, or maybe Kennedy's assassin thought about all this and arranged most of the things so it would look "artistic".

That's an old list. It was turned into a song during the 1960s.

It's called "Apophenia" : the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data.

See : "Linkin' Kennedy", snopes.com : http://www.snopes.com/history/american/lincoln-kennedy.asp

And : "Coincidence" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coincidence

Wow, I'm fairly impressed with the amount of effort that some people put into these things. I thought of going through all this to see if it's all correct, but honestly, why bother?!

Looks like the CIA just adapted Lincoln's story to make the perfect crime .

It's incredible, the number of times this meaningless set of coincidences gets dragged out, it's been in Yahoo answers a few time already. Could someone come up with a new set of meaningless coincidences please? I'm getting bored with this one.
