Sounds like you don't have POP3/SMTP access. If you use Hotmail, you can just go to the web based email. http://www.hotmail.com

If you want to use Outlook, Gmail has free POP3/SMTP. If you contact me, I can send you a free Gmail invite.

You receive an error message when you use Outlook Express or Outlook to access your Hotmail account

Steps to resolve the problem
Upgrade your Hotmail account
If you want to use Outlook Express to access your Hotmail account, you must have a Hotmail Plus subscription. To obtain a Hotmail Plus subscription, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

yes. microsoft at there best again screwing the consumer for more money. outlook express will not allow you to set up an e-mail account using hotmail or yahoo or any other outside e-mail program unless it is a paid e-mail account.
do what I did and get rid of outlook and just use your free accounts.
you can do this by going to control panel click on add remove programs and the choose set program access and defaults, when the page opens choose custom and the choose hotmail or what ever your outside email account is click appy and now your hotmail or what ever is your default mail account or client and no more messing with outlook.

For some bizarre reason, Microsoft stopped support for Hotmail accounts with Outlook Express (and probably Outlook soon as well) so now you have to have a paid MSN subscription for it. You could try another free email client such as Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/) and see if you can add Hotmail accounts to that.

you have answered your own question, Hotmail no longer allows this.

Try GMAIL.COM for an alternative free webmail service that CAN be accessed by outlook (Full tutorials in their help pages) or use Hotmail's Web pages to access abd send mails.

Hotmail is a web based e-mail account. You have to go to your hotmail account via the internet and log in to send mail.

You need to log directly into your hotmail account instead of using outlook.
