Just by visiting B & Q I found out that I can buy a cordless unit with a long attachment with a headtrimmer at the end, or I cna buy a petrol unit with a long attachment too. However, I am not sure which is best or is there another tool. The Llandiis I want to keep capped - the height of a street light. I think that is 12 - 15 feet. The trees are by a road thats why I know they are the height of a street light. Then there is the question of do I need to buy some scaffolding, bearing in mind this will be a job needing doing once every 2 months. If so what is the cheapest to buy and best size.

The good news is that you can use a ladder - just tie it, and have someone foot it. Just be careful. The advantage of a ladder is that it takes you in to the tree, not just up to the right hight.

You can use an ordinary saw to cut through - the wood's not tough like a deciduous tree. Make a small cut on one side, inch / 3cm, then cut through from the other side at a level just above the first cut. Why - so that when you are nearly cut through the top can be pushed in the direction of the first cut, and won't cause the bark to strip. Plan which way you want the top to fall.

I did this to a tree a few years ago. The rate of regrowth is very low because this process removes the growing tip (trees grow from the top). Haven't had to do it since. After that you can use clippers.

The best way to deal with this scourge of suburbia is to take a chainsaw to the trunk, about an inch above the ground.

I suggest a flamethrower. Burn the tree right down.
