Good Question...
Well...it depends who you refer to as the AUTHOR of the book. I think you mean the creator of the situation or whatever your trying to judge. So beasically the person that is the first link to it.
Well...there was a saying that one does not need to be an artist to create art.
What this has to do with this...well...the author does not have to be the most perfect person in the world for the book to be a great one. (philosiphically speaking).
There's also another saying that my mother used to tell me. She said that it just because the artist choses to paint a sunset it doesn't mean red is an any better colour than yellow.
(Do you get my point?:-)...
So...the author doesn't have to be a great great great person for the book to be a great great great read.
All the author does write the words and make the story. The reader is the one that makes them breathe and brings them to life.
The author can be considered the leader of the book/words/reader yes. But a true leader(author) does not command/lead its followers(readers)...a true leader/author serves(wises) it's followers/readers.
I hope this has helped you Enki in any which way and that was one of your best questions.
Keep up the ...GREAT...work.

Well, let's put it this way:
Everybody gleans a first impression from the cover almost immediately. From the cover, you expect certain content.
Some people then check the author or start there. They get an overview of the style and such if they know the author. Unfortunately, most times, there's no way to know still.
Some then wonder if it's worth the time by reading the synopsis. While you might get an idea, it never beats...
READING the book. Studying it and judging for yourself. Some books turn out radically different from what you first anticipated. So if you want to accurately and fairly judge a book, read it. Get to know it. You'd be surprised with what you may find.

Also found in the cover is a small synopsis of the book. However, if you know the authors background and have read other books he has written, you can basically get the jest of what is in the book, mood, tone and message. I personally will not read some authors because of their opinions of certain matters, but then again reading what one might call is the "enemies" message, helps one understand where others might be coming from. So, I will have to admit in a round about way...........you can really judge the inside of the book by the inside of the author!
I might add, that when this saying is applied to a human being, of which it is most of the time, that is because mankind has a way of making rash, bigoted, prejudiced and unreasonable assumption just by a person looks. In all cases, the outwardly appearance of a man/woman, child has nothing to do with the inside character of that person.

Enki I love this question I actually asked a question like this about falling in love with the book cover but when you read the book you do not like what is inside hahahaha
How can you judge the author without reading what is inside of the book. The author could be a renowned writer but his book cover picture might not be eyecatching!! its all about marketing Enki Binki remember that people always try to make things look good on the outside but it is on the inside that really matters in the end right. How many books were sold haha probably because of a catchy cover the book looked interesting from the cover and than when you read it you were surprised that it was not good.............
But at the same time you can judge the book by it author if you know enough about his others books but still not every book can be that great either from previous books look at the Harry Potter books perfect example :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Happy day Enki Binki :)))))))))))))))

Actually I think that you should use the cover to at least HELP judge the book. Covers are carefully chosen by publishers to reflect the mood and subject of the piece. I think the wisdom of that cliche is that you shouldn't judge a book ONLY by its cover.
And yes, you should judge a book by its Author. How else are you going to judge a book without reading it? Of course authors have ups and downs but if you really like an author there is a good chance that you will like the book.
Reviews help too but that is always someone else's opinion, someone else's taste. A multiplicity of sources is always the best fodder for decision making.

Buy cover-less editions. Authors often use pseudonyms . Content is always, always, ALWAYS the important part of any book. Have you read any of Lemony-snickets's? In the 19th Century traveling peddlers sold Family Bibles in fascicle editions, one might buy one or two signatures a month, and the cover was sold separately. Sometimes people bought the cover and whatever fascicles happened to be available so they'd have a nice complete looking Bible to set on the table in the parlor when the preacher came to visit or an itinerant schoolmaster stayed overnight. Fascicles might be traded and families did manage somehow to get correct complete editions, except in the unfortunate circumstance that a publisher went out of business or size and style changed. These odd books and their covers are still around today and some of them are cherished family heirlooms. We know nothing of the actual author for the greater number of books in the Bible, despite names which appear in their titles, so neither cover nor author is necessary to the book most of the time.
I honestly wish people would judge me by my Author, there's no better way.
He's not into coverups.

To judge a book by it's cover represents a situation where the cover of the book may be dirty, not attractive, and generally unappealing to the eye.
To judge a book by it's Author is a different ballgame however. One will have to cognize the author's peculiar ideologies, and such like.
As an example, ancient imperial historians where know to omit details about military defeats from their annals and to retain details only of military victories.
Therefore, to judge the book by it's author does have merits. The author while on the cover is captured better by his statements, since by a mn's speaking he reveils he's innermost thoughts.

Do not judge an author by the cover either. The content of the book and not the cover portray the quality, message and essence of the book.

you will have to read some unknown author for making your judgement.
you can make a list of some favourite authors.
the content is more important than name, fame, title, cover and picture on the book.
your favourite may have also written something boa ring.
there is no specific criteria for choosing the book/author...just go by your intuition.

If you're not judging the book by it's cover then it always follows you're judging it by its author. Makes sense?
Author interpretatively in that maxim means not only the disclosure of name but the ways, styles, techniques he used to compose the piece. The same way with dailiness of life, we have given names to identify us, but we are judged by our actions, decisions, and ways of living in conformity to moral standards.
