I've never seen a baby really do this before. Is it normal? My daughter has been hitting herself a lot these past few days mainly on her belly or legs, and I'm getting a touch worried. Nervous first time mum, hehe.

My daughter has above average control of her body. She can roll balls, wave, replace the pacifier, play pat a cake, roll both ways, feed herself, stand holding weight on her legs and all that stuff. She also says mum and dada.

Does your daughter seem to be frustrated when she does this. My daughter does this when she is mad. She will also hit anyone who is close enough. for my duaghter it is a way of expressing herself and her feelings.

Young babies often have jerky and involuntary movements of their arms and legs. 7 months old seems a little old to be having these movements, BUT every child develops at a different rate. Is your child crawling, reaching, grabbing...does she have control over her arms and legs enough to grab a pacifier and put it in her mouth? This doesnt seem like anything to worry about so early, but you should talk to your doctor and possible get an early screen for autism if this behavior continues past 12 months...Good Luck and I am sure your baby is fine.

It's normal so don't worry. Let me tell you about my kids. I was so scared at first. My son would hit himself "down there". He would pull on it til I thought it would fall off. He would smack it, grab things to hit it with, and all of that. I was so scared I would never have grandchildren. But when he did it he never cried. So it obviously didn't hurt. Now my daughter is 14 months and she bites herself. Never very hard but sometimes leaves bite marks. It also scares me a little but once again she never cries about it so it doesn't hurt her. I asked my doc about it and she said that it's normal and they will grow out of it. Sure enough my son doesn't do it anymore so hopefully in a little while my daughter won't do it anymore. As long as your daughter isn't hurting herself, then don't worry about it. And if she by chance does hurt herself once then she won't do that action again I'm sure.

it doesnt sound like anything out of the ordinary she is starting to realize now at 7 months that she has body parts other than her hands and her feet, some babies hit themselves, some babies poke at themselves or pinch themselves this is all a new experience for her you can help her adjust to the fact that these parts are on her body by playing with her pat on her tummy and sing her a song or blow rasberries on her belly or just kiss and tickle her belly tickle her legs or move them in bicycle like motions this not only exercises her legs but helps her realize that she has them. I wouldnt be concerned about it at all but if you still are after reading my post contact your physician and he will reassure you as well. 7 months is a great age they are finally starting to play and get interested in whats going on around them have fun with her!!

My bub also does some crazy things but it's just them exploring their environment this includes their bodies. I would only worry if she actually starts hurting herself or crying when she does it. Having said that I can still remember the day my daughter grabbed her face (under 6wks old) and screamed as if to say help me mummy someone has got my face. They're beautiful and amazing little things aren't they?

I dare say its just a phrase she is going through. She has realised that perhaps you react to it - so its worth doing cos Mom pays attention???
She's unlikely to do it to the point where she will hurt herself so don't overstress about it! Mine currently seems to think its fun to kick hell out of his cot bars - gotta hurt, but he keeps on doing it! He'll learn!!!
Maybe a word with your HV - and nervous first time mums are great!! We have all been there :)

It probably is normal cuz i have a 1 1/2 year old cuzin that gets mad and hits his head on random stuff. He normally does it when some1 says no to him or when his older sister won't share.

If she was hurting herself she would stop it. Sounds natural to me. She found a way of doing something that reacts to you and her body. She is just experimenting. I would not worry this is just her way of learning things :)

It's normal as long as the hitting is not too severe.
Babies often hit themselves when they get strain in their legs.
