My 8 yr loves the water and can swim from one side of our pool to the other without coming up for air. She is like a little rocket. She asked me about swimming sports or water sports and I don't know anything about them. Help!

Your local colleges, community center, YMCA, or JCC might have a swimming clinic or competitive swimming classes. Most offer those classes as an introduction to competitive swim teams. If she's never had lessons, that's the best place for her to start - learning the proper techniques.

Once she's learned the strokes and turns, the same places offer swimming teams for youth swimmers. They refine strokes and help the swimmer learn to swim even faster, but it's not the same as lessons.

8 is a good age to start swim team. I started swim classes when I was 2 and joined a swim team when I was like 4 or 5. So if your child really likes water there is probably a swim team at your community pool. Most likely the season has already started but there might be late sign ups.

Its never too late to start a sport! Especially swimming! I started a year ago when i was 13 and now that I'm getting older I'm getting better! Its a great sport to stay and get into shape. It also teaches good sportsmanship and gives you endurance. I swam High school this year and i did great. But there were also some not so great people that were on it. High school is not a cut sport and the coaches are very helpful. They will help you get alot better. Also after the high school season is over, its good to go onto a club team where you can swim year round and get even better. And its great that you are willing to put time into it. coaches really like that!

about age 8 your girls age is about the best time to start. They are at the age where they can learn well and are willing to listen to a trainer. where i live the city pool has a swim team and they travel to different county to meets. this is the team my son was on from 8-13 and then he didnt want to do it anymore. The YMCA will also have a swimteam. these are usaully during the summer months. But i think this would be great for your child. look into it and if you dont have these teams in your town call the chamber of Commerce in your town they maybe able to help. At this web site u can look to see what the YMCA in your area offers. ty and gl

8 is a great age to start swimming. Call your local pool or recreation center and ask them about the swim team or where you can find a swim team for an 8 year old if they don't have a swim team.

8 is just right! She will still be in the youngest age group which is the most focused on instruction which will allow her to learn at the same pace as everyone else. Depending on the competitive nature of the team there may be requirements or tryouts. Your best bet is to go to the local YMCA and ask as the person above me said. That will give you the info you need to get your daughter started. It sounds like she's ready so go for it!

Check with your local Rec Dept. My oldest daughter was on the swim team at 6 and my youngest at 4. They stayed active on the team for years and loved competing. Be warned competing on the swim team usually involves a lot of practice and a lot of travel on the parents part.

8 is a wonderful age to join a swim team. She's old enough to be able to behave for an hour long practice, but young enough to still acquire the skills she needs without much difficulty. She'll have a blast!

8 is great!
Start her now!
I started when I was 8 and now I'm 14 and I can swim a 50 in 27 seconds.
If she really loves to swim, then she'll work hard at practice and excel.
Good luck
