as the answers above me prove, yes, evil is a product of ignorance.

To be ignorant of reality leaves one evil.

To say that being ignorant of good and evil saves one from good or evil, is stupid and ignorant, which is evil.

To say that selfishness is evil is ignorant and stupid... only spoiled selfish people who are ignorant of evil are evil, these are the people that give selfishness a bad name; a real selfish person is moral, because they know what to do with their own selves.

And to say that some of the most intelligent people (as if intelligences saves one from ignorance) in history were evil is stupid and ignorant... yes some of the most intelligent people in history were evil, but to claim that they were not ignorant is very stupid... while they do know the repercussions of their actions very well, these are geniuses who became spoiled with themselves, and sought power over equally intelligent peoples, ignorant of this fact, ignorant that they most likely would have to deal with the consquences...many of them probably still thought they would go to heaven.

so yes, ignorance is a factor of evil.

well... if you look at our government its 100% true. Take the war in Iraq which has killed over 3,400 american troops and 500,000 Iraqi civilians- why was it started? because of absolute utter ignorance. Ignorance about who to target, ignorance about Islam, ignorance on the part of the American government, the American people who blindly supported the war, and most of all the American "president" as a result of all this ignorance a crime of genocidal proportions has been committed- and if thats not evil, i don't know what is.

Depends on the type of evil, and depends on the type of ignorance.

'Evil' has many different forms and types. So does ignorance. Some kinds of ignorance can be or lead to evil, other kinds don't. It is the same vice versa. Some kinds of evil can be or lead to ignorance. It depends.

Not in the slightest true.

Some of the most evil men in history have been very intelligent.

Surely to be truly evil, you need the intelligence to carry it out?

If you were ignorant, you'd just be a thug, and they're not really evil, they're just thickies.

***EDIT***
But surely the question posed, jesusoffh, is that if you are ignorant then you are evil - in other words, all ignorant people are evil, and thats not the case is it?

If you want to use my definition of evil, listed below, then evil is not the product of Ignorance, but ignorance is a prerequisite of being evil. (Yes, I am away that the difference seams to be merely a matter of semantics, but I think the distinction is note worthy.)

EVIL - Intentional and unrepentant ignorance*, indolence**, Gluttony+, Bigotry++ and Cowardice.#

* Ignorance: The condition of being uninformed or uneducated. lacking knowledge or information
** indolence: Habitually lazy, procrastinating, or resistance to physical or mental labor.
+ Gluttony: (archaic definition) Thoughtless and unreasonable excess. (This is not limited to food and drink by could include any substance (drugs, alcohol, tobacco, etc...), sex, gambling, etc... even money! [seeking money for the sake of having money or seeking it to the exclusion of all other pursuits would be gluttonous.])
++ Bigotry: Irrational intolerance and/or disdain of others based on racial, ethnical and/or cultural differences.
#Cowardice: Lack of mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty to a reasonable level of commitment.

{If you don't like my definition of evil, you should see my list of Vices and Virtues. >:-) lol}

Then you would have to conclude that every ignorant person is Evil and that all intellectual persons are Good..........

That's not the case is it!?! Think of a lot of our dictators throughout history....some of our " leaders" today.......etc

However, it is true that ignorance is more likely to result in Evil......I think the worse of " Evils" are the intelectual ones

I think Evil is a product of selfishness. Sometimes it's easier to do the wrong thing then doing the right thing.

One who is genuinely not ignorant, would shun evil thoughts in the firm knowledge that evil does not pay in the final analysis.

Jesusoffh's self-righteous and egotistical answer has proven his own theory incorrect.
We don't, for one second, consider him evil but bordering on ignorant.

Evil people use ignorance as an excuse for their deeds but almost invariably they are found to be extremely cognitive of their actions and the repercussions.

If one is ignorant of right and wrong or good versus evil..then there is no right or wrong or good or evil.
