Eat healthy, exercise regularly, don't smoke. All play a good role in reducing your risk for high blood pressure. However, one of the biggest roles is uncontrollable(genetics), and the majority of high blood pressure cases do not have a physiologically known specific cause.

Cut out salt.
Salt causes high blood pressure. It also causes water retention, respiratory problems, kidney disease and osteoperosis (loss of bone calcium). Avoid commercially prepared foods as they are loaded in salt. Avoid shaking the salt shaker as most foods contain enough salt naturally that you don't need to add more.
Walking, exercise and lowering sugar intake are all good things toward a healthier you but to lower HBP, cut out the salt! All the best.......

Throw your salt shaker in the trash can, .... where it belongs. High blood pressure is caused by too much salt, and salty foods, like french fries, pickles, olives, and some fast food.
Eliminate salt from you diet, and you'll see remarkable results.

as you said , walking , regular soft sports ,and managed nutrition , should control blood pressure, how ?
you can just manage salt ( NaCl ) proportions in your food to take the relativity of salt to sweating rate to fill the lack of salts in the body when required and not to exceed its natural level , even sugar is the same thing , both of sugar and salt ( in general term ) causes hypertension if exceeded the natural range bcz as you know raising their levels means raising their concentrations in the blood which will encounter difficulties in its normal flow in the capillaries resulting hypertension which is gonna affect heart pace to expand in number of shots to troubleshoot this case.
