The Pacific war basically came to an end with the nuclear bombing (atomic bomb) of Nagasaki and Hiroshima on the Japanese mainland.

The A-bomb at the time was a very new weapon. In fact, two different types were used. The long-term effects of nuclear radiation were unknown at the time, but we now now the terrible consequences, and as such, although we have continued to develop nuclear weapons, they have never been used since on a live population.

Nuclear weapons still determine the Balance of Power in the world, and many countries hoping to raise their status in the world are trying to develop nuclear capability, but their efforts to do so are strongly resisted by the powers at the top.
