Because there was a war between the chickens and the buffalos to see which one to name the wings after. They'd been fighting about it for years! The war was declared June 24th, 1899 and obviously the Buffalos won haha =D

Buffaloes do have wings...they're tiny, and difficult to see under the fur.

I think the wings were invented in Buffalo, New York, but I'm not certain.
