Nationalism is the common bond which holds the people of a nation together. Most people are proud to belong to a country and are usually prepared to do what they have to do to defend it.
In the extreme however, it can lead people to blindly follow the course of their leader, as in Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy.
We still see extreme cases of nationalism, for example in North Korea. This is usually the result of censorship of conflicting opinions, controlled release of information and what amounts to 'brain-washing' in the educational system. There are also harsh punishments for dissenters and people who do not believe the leader is infallible.
