The summer olympics closes with the mens marathon (I believe the games themselves were partially a response to the first marathon run after a battle), so in effect that could be the most prestigious.

A lot of attention is placed on the Decathalon, suggesting that the winner might be the best overall athlete in the world. The 100 meter sprint gets mentioned as well since the winner of that is usually labeled the fastest person in the world.

But I guess it depends on what country you are from. In the US I believe the most popular event in either olympics is the womens figureskating. Other countries put big emphasis on cross country skiing & ski jump, and those who compete in them are the biggest sports celebrities in their country.

And I think a lot of it has to do with how prominent the olympic competition of that sport is compared to other places that it is played. Noone in their right mind would put soccer as a prestigious olympic sport since people don't talk about olympic medals for soccer, they talk about world cup wins. But other sports it's the olympics that is the biggest event in that sport.
