the heater should be automatic(if its working right). just set the thermostat and forget about it. it has a tiny neon lite that turns on and off as the heater turns on and off.

You don't turn an Aquarium Heater on and off. They are thermostatically controlled. Turn the heater on, let the aquarium water heat to the proper temperature, the slowly turn the heater off until the light goes out. This should allow the heater to turn on when the water cools below the optimum temperature, and off again when optimum temperature is reached. Next time read the directions that come with it, that makes things a lot easier. Also make sure you buy only a sealed heater, not one of those cheapies that clip over the edge and will fill up with water when dropped into a tank.

The heater will maintain the tank at 78 degrees but if the water gets warmer than that the heater will shut off and only come back on when the water gets colder than 78 degrees and will then warm the water back up to 78 degrees. It won't cool the water but will keep it a constant temperature as long as it is well maintained and doesn't get broke or damaged.

almost if not all heater have a thermostat that will turn it off at a selected temp, usually a knob at the top, but be sure to use a thermometer in the tank as well, some heaters are off by a few degrees. well off and on

It depends also on what kind of fish that you have. I have goldfish, so I only used it when they got ick and I did a salt treatment to raise the temp to 88 degrees to kill all the ich. I unplugged my heater because after that I couldn't get the temp down enough with it plugged in at all. If you have tropical fish that like warmer water, you could keep in on low in the summer. Some tanks don't get above 74 even in the summer.

Most heaters automatically turn on and off depending on the temperature.

it depends on your house temperature and the fish you have -- if your house is over 75 all summer its probably safe to put it away.
