Inertia refers to resistance of change,I mean when a body is in motion it resist stoppin while a body in rest resist motion this resistace is referred to as inertia

Inertia is the property of an object to remain at constant velocity unless acted upon by an outside force. The principle of inertia is one of the fundamental laws of classical physics which are used to describe the motion of matter and how it is affected by applied forces. Today, it is most commonly defined using Sir Isaac Newton's First Law of Motion, which states:

Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight ahead, except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by forces impressed. [Cohen & Whitman 1999 translation]

The description of inertia presented by Newton's law is still considered the standard for classical physics. However, it has also been refined and expanded over time to reflect developments in understanding of relativity and quantum physics which have led to somewhat different (and more mathematical) interpretations in some of those fields.

Newton's first law of motion tells us an object in motion tends to remain in motion; an object at rest tends to stay at rest.

Inertia is that "tendency." It is the tendency of any object to continue in a straight line at it's present velocity (which may be zero) unless an outside force makes it do otherwise.

Sometimes, people use the terms inertia and momentum interchangebly. Momentum is the product of an object's mass and velocity (m * v) and is an indicator of how much resistance an object has to having it's motion changed.

The next time you're at the table for luch or dinner, pull the table cloth away from the table in a brisk movement. When all the glasses and plates stay in place, that's inertia. When everything lands on the floor, that's a cockup.

inertia is a measure of how much force it takes to make an object change it's path. If an object is moving it has more inertia so it takes more force to make it change direction.
