You bought an ethernet card NOT KNOWING what it is ?
You didn't check what format it needs to be to fit the laptop ?

If it's PCI, go back to shop with it, ask if they will exchange it, IT WILL NOT FIT: PCI is for desktops

If it's PCMCIA, then look for teh PCMCIA slot on the laptop.
If it is Express Card, look for that slot
If it is USB, plug it into a USB port.

Most importantly READ the instructions, most USB devices you install drivers BEFORE you plug it in, but check for other formats.

Also read documentation for laptop to check for ports it has.

MOST laptop in the last few years already HAVE an ethernet / network port build in to them

BTW Ethernet is the technical name for a network port. Looks a little like a phone socket, but wider

There are 3 types that can be on a notebook
1) USB. Install it just like the instruction state.

2) PC card or PCMCIA. This is a card about the size of a credit card. It will insert into one of the PCMCIA. This too will have explicit instructions on how to install the card.

3) The mini-PCI card. this is about 2"x3" and looks like a RAM module. There will be two hatches on the bottom of your notebook. One will be for your RAM and the other will be for the mini-PCI card. You will know you have the right slot when you see it. It will only go in on way.

In the link below you will see the RAM on the left and the mini-PCI on the right. This is obviously not your notebook but it will illustrate my point.

I am guessing that you bought a PCMCIA Ethernet card. If this is what you bought, then you should have a PCMCIA slot on your laptop. It would be about 2" wide. You would need to install your driver CD first, then plug in the Ethernet card. Most setup programs I have seen will prompt for your to insert the card during the setup flow.

Here is an example of a PCMCIA card:

It's for broadband, highspeed internet or you can use to to share files with other computers if they have cards too and you buy a switch/hub.

You just open up the computer (turn it off first) and there is a few slots together lined up with the card holes on the back of the PC. They are PCI sockts. You may have to remove a small thin panel to open the space and stick the card in the slot. Windows should automatically see it and install it or you can use the CD that may have came with it.

Your laptop most probably already has this function built in. Look at the sockets along the outside edge of the case. There will be one for a telephone link up and usually a similar one but larger, which is the ethernet connection. My laptop is 4 years old and had this inbuilt when purchased.
