I'm biased toward American teen books so I'll choose The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. It's a great read for both boys and girls.

My favorite teen book is a literary series called "Anne of Green Gables." It takes place in 19th century Canada where Anne Shirley, an orphan, is taken in by an elderly brother and sister living together and she changes their lives.
Three movies were made about it as well as an animated TV series on PBS (by the way, the third movie made about it was crap since it wasn't based on the book series).
Harry Potter is good too, but not as good as "Anne." I also read the Nancy Drew book series as a pre-teen and loved it.

The John Marsden series which starts with 'Tomorrow When the War Began' was a fantastic reading experience for my son when he was a teenager. It addresses all sorts of hot issues that teenagers are just becoming aware of- war, politics, racism, friendships that get blurred by sex, peer relationships, death and so on- but it does it from the perspective of the teenagers in the middle of a brilliantly written, fast-paced adventure. Impossible to put down. I got hooked on the books too!

Okay for current, I LOVE Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. AWESOME books.
Then for older, I agree with the above. Try Anne of Green Gables. Movies are great too.

The best teenager books ever written are Lirael and Abhorsen, the Eragon trilogy, A School for Sorcery, Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen, Abarat and it's sequel, Dragon and Thief, The House of the Scorpions, Fairest, Witch Child, and plenty of others.
Even though you asked for one book, it was too hard because these books are great in their own way.
