Cyprus does not belong to either Greece or Turkey. It was an Ottoman province until 1878, when the Ottomans rented it to the British. After the start of WWI, the British annexed the island and made it a crown colony.
The two main communities are Turkish and Greek Cypriots, with a small Maronite, Armenian and Latin minorities.
In 1960, Cyprus became an independent republic shared by Turkish and Greek Cypriots. This shared republic did not live long unfortunately. Greek Cypriot president Makarios wanted to amend 13 articles of the constitution, which was refused by the Turkish community. Armed conflict started at the end of 1963, which resulted in Turkish Cypriots being ousted from the government offices, and hundreds of Turkish Cypriots (and some Greek Cypriots) killed, many wounded, and deserted villages.
Turkish Cypriots lived in enclaves until 1974, when the Greek Junta devised a coup against Makarios on 15 July 1974. As one of the three guarantor powers, Turkey asked UK to intervene together in order to stop bloodshed. UK declined and Turkey had to move in alone. Turkish troops landed in the north on 20 July 1974. By the end of August 35% of the island (north was secured by Turkey. The coup was a failure. EOKA (Greek Cypriot armed militia) attacked and killed hundreds of Turkish Cypriot civilians. In return many Greek Cypriots, mostly soldiers were killed in the war.
After a summit agreement between the leaders of the two communities, a population exchange was carried out. Since then, Turks live in the north and Greeks live in the south.
The authority in the south (Rep. of Cyprus) is recognized as the only government of the island. Turkish Cypriots unilaterally declared Turkish Rep. of Northern Cyprus in 1983.
Bi-communal talks have been going on since 1968 to find a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution to the problem. Fours years ago a UN peace plan, known as the Annan Plan, was put to referenda. Turkish Cypriots approved it by 65%, but Greek Cypriots refused the plan with a 77% no vote. Since then, the south (Rep.of Cyprus) is a EU member. The north is still not recognized by any country except Turkey.
Prior to the referenda, the Green Line which separates the two parts have been opened at several points for easy access of all.
Although the leaders are keeping their positions, peace loving citizens from both sides are still working for a re unification of the island.

Cyprus belongs to Cyprus.....both Greek Cypriots & Turkish Cypriots leave there (greek cypriots-80%, turkish-18%), unfortunately under an ethnic cleansing made by Turks....t/c in the north, g/c in the south (free part) Cyprus is an independent country and the north part is illegal and recognized as a country only by Turkey.....All countries recognize Cyprus as a whole...
Yeah i know, its complicated....

It "belongs" to itself. However, it is divided:
-- the area under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus in the south of the island;
-- the area in the north, styling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus;
-- the United Nations-controlled Green Line, separating the two; and
-- two Sovereign Base Areas (Akrotiri and Dhekelia), over which the United Kingdom retained jurisdiction after Cypriot independence

Cyprus is it's both country. However, it used to belong to Greece, and if it weren't it's own country, it'd really be a Greek island like Crete. It's stupid that Cyprus is it's own country, cuz that'd be like Crete becoming it's own country. Except Crete's like 3x the size.
Yes, the northern part is inhabbited by Turks, but they aren't native to that area. They came and occupied it. Just like they did w/ Turkey.

No, you didn't know it because Cyprus doesn't belong to Greece. It doesn't belong to any country, it is independent. The north is ILLEGALLY occupied by the turks and the 'TRNC' is only recognised by Turkey as well. I don't know why people are so ignorant and believe that Cyprus belongs to any country or that the illegally occupied area is another country.

Cyprus is an independent state, it doesn't belong to Greece, although its population is mostly Greek. However, the northern part is occupied by Turkish forces, although it is not part of Turkey either. The Turkish area is not recognised as a state, of course.

most people believe Cyprus belongs to another country but the truth is that Cyprus is devided. The west half up to half of Nicosia is an idependent country and the east half is indioendent but ruled by a turkish leader.
