I would not order something I had to eat with my hands on a date, you can however eat with your hands at a BBQ ( ribs, fried chicken, chicken wings) At a sporting event, at the movies, anywhere they serve food that has to be eaten with your hands.

When you are alone. When you are with a good friend whom between formality no longer is required. When you are lost and starving in the suffocatingly dense boscage and, in order to survive, must resort to picking fruits, eating bugs, and killing any meaty animals like birds or pigs.

whenever you need to use your hands I think it's perfectly acceptable. I've actually seen someone try and eat corn on the cob with a knife and fork! and it looked so silly!
just use your best judgement.
