I often put my last load of laundry in the washer before I go to bed. If I don't have time to put it in the dryer in the morning, it often smells sour by the time I get home in the evening, and has to be re-washed to get rid of the odor.

Is there a way to prevent this happening?

I do laundry like that all the time... I put a load of wash in the wash before I go to bed and when I get up I put the load in the dryer... Your problem seems that you get up and leave, instead of putting the clothes in the dryer... The simple solution is to set your alarm for 5 min. sooner and put the laundry in the dryer... You'll save time/energy in the long run... Or only wash clothes when you have time to wash/dry....

No. You could leave the washer lid up but if you start the load before you go to bed you won't be able to. Just try to wash them at a time when you won't get tired before the load is done.

Put in the soap then fill the tub about 1/4 full of water and add a little chlorine bleach. Mix it thoroughly in the water then add your clothes.

The smell is from fungus and bacteria on the clothes starting to grow in the nice dark damp environment. Regular detergent does not kill microbes.

I have been doing it this way for years and now I can leave my clothes for a few days and they don't start to rot.

Um not really, don't start a load of wash if you don't intend to also dry it right after the wash is done.

no, thats mildew in your clothes causing that stench, and it comes from leaving wet items sitting for long periods of time. If you don't have time to wash and dry before bed, its best just to wait until the next day...

Don't start the wash until you get home.
Really, you have to re-wash, so skip the first wash.

Oxy-clean is a detergent booster. You might try that.
