I've been a ranch hand. You have no idea how tough a life that is. There are no days off. The cattle don't play poker on the weekends. The fields need to be plowed, sown, irrigation ditches cleaned, crops harvested. Chicken doesn't come wrapped in plastic, it's wrapped in feathers and they don't come off easy, and you know that hollow part, it ain't hollow! You don't get ground beef at Vons, you get it from that bigassed thing staring at you from across the field. But you got a little prep work to go through (I'll spare you the details). If you want eggs for breakfast, you can find them in that hot, ammonia smelling coop over there. Keep an eye on that rooster, he'll tag you good!
It doesn't matter if it's raining enough to scare Noah, it doesn't matter if it's 20 below and 4 feet of snow. The animals have to be fed, watered, medicated, weened, cleaned, and gathered. Oh and it's not like cleaning the cat box. Wait til the spring thaw hits the barnyard and you're walking through three feet of cow pies.
Thanks, I'll choose civilization.

For the sake of our kids....the old days would be great. All kids got lots of exercise cause they played all the time. And I don't believe there were as many child preditors as there are these days. I don't know about all of you...but there was actually a day when kids could play all day long. Just show up to check in with Mom And Dad at lunch, and home before dark. Before cars people were not as transient and most people knew all their neighbors. And of course family naturally lived nearby.

Sometimes, but then I realize that if I actually lived in it, it would be a lot harder. Maybe we wouldn't have pollution and traffic, but we'd still have to get up at 5 am and we wouldn't have things like indoor plumbing, stoves, COMPUTERS! haha.
It sure wasn't a picnic for those people... look at what the mortality rate was.
I say keep looking ahead to the future. But I do sympathize with you :)

At certain times yes. I live in Iowa (no i am not a farmer or even live near one) but i did go visit my uncles farm. I really learned to respect people who do tend to their own land because it is very hard work

Well sometimes I do but then I remember back in those days there were so few medical advances and people would often die at the ripe old age of 23.

YES!!!!! very much so. I miss the simplicity....Well, I can't really say miss since I didn't live back then, but really I wish things were like that!
Especially cuz everyone walked barefoot and no one gave a damn.
